GENERAL COMMENTS

As we conclude another exciting and successful youth hockey season, it is now time to start planning the next.

It is our hope that your child has had a fun and rewarding season with their team. New friendships, new experiences and new skills are things we hope have been generated over the past 6 months.

The Board of Directors has developed guidelines to help improve Stoneham Youth Hockey’s Tryout process.  There are infinite amounts of ways that teams can be picked.  None are perfect.  The SYH Board of Directors are always looking to make improvements where needed.  It’s a learning process and we feel we have made improvements with each and every passing year.

Sadly enough, there will always be people that are disappointed with the tryout results and the team selection.  Human nature dictates that people will have a difference of opinion.  It is the goal of the Board to place players where they will have an opportunity to succeed and compete.  In seasons past, we have not heard too many complaints that a player was on the wrong team at the end of the year.

We know there is still a lot to do in our effort to make Stoneham Youth Hockey one of the premier youth hockey organizations in the area.  Our commitment is to do the best we can to adhere to the objectives of the association.

·         The objective of the Association shall be to impart to the boys and girls in the community the ideals of       good sportsmanship while having fun within the framework of competition.

·         The objectives will be achieved by providing supervised instruction, adequate ice facilities and       competitive athletic hockey games.

·         All members of the Association shall bear in mind that the attainment of exceptional individual skills       or the winning of games is secondary, and that team play and molding of future members of the       community is of prime importance.

We look forward to seeing you!

FEES / ELIGIBILITY

Due to the increasing need of having to plan for the upcoming season throughout the summer months, it is imperative that we solidify a realistic budget for next season.  With more and more Select, Metro and Club teams all bidding for ice time, we must reserve practice ice now.  In addition, leagues require us to make deposits for each team.  Therefore, with the need to reserve ice, make league deposits, and buy equipment such as socks, jerseys, pucks, cones, etc., during the summer months we are forced to impose a strict payment policy.

Players must meet the following financial qualifications in order to be eligible for tryouts:

  • Returning players MUST have their 2009 - 2010 ice bill paid in full.

All players must register with Stoneham Youth Hockey on-line and pay the stated Non-Refundable Deposit of $250.00 per child which is applied towards the 2010 – 2011 ice bill which will not exceed $1,550.00.

(The association’s expenses are predicated on the number of teams we have and the total number of players.  We can estimate our costs for next season now, but we cannot be sure of any exact numbers until registration closes.  We will look more closely at all of the numbers once the registration process is finished.  If we can reduce the rates we will do so.)

·         The ice bill pays for:

      *2010 - 2011 Tryouts                         *2010 - 2011 Practice Ice                  *Game Jersey & Socks

*Minimum of 30 Valley League games plus playoffs *Skills (two sessions)

USA Hockey registration for 2010 - 2011 will still be required through www.usahockey.com

TRYOUT FORMAT

A Tryout Committee made up of internal raters will evaluate each player.  The internal raters will consist of Level Directors and coaches familiar with the kids trying out at that level.  Therefore, the internal raters will differ from level to level.  The internal raters will present their player evaluations to the Board of Directors.  The Board will nominate a head coach who will have access to the evaluations.  There will be NO parity at the start of 2010 – 2011 seasons.

  • Tryouts will consist of two sessions for Mites through Bantams.  Dates and times will be posted on the website.

  • All players will be given tryout numbers.  Players with jerseys that have numbers already on them should be worn inside out.  This will make it easier for the raters to see the player’s tryout number. Players will keep their tryout number with them for both times and returned at the conclusion of the tryout.  It will be their responsibility to bring his/her tryout number to the rink.

MITES & SQUIRTS - Team selection will be determined by the player’s numerical rating system.  If the Board believes that “egregious errors” are made, they may vote to move a player.

PEEWEE & BANTAM - Team selection will be determined by the head coaches.

MIDGETS - Tryouts will be conducted by the team coaches.  Schedule to be determined.  Depending on the number of players registered, team placement and position will be determined by the coach’s evaluations.  Additional days for Tryouts may be scheduled.

GIRLS – Tryouts will be conducted by the team coaches.  Schedule to be determined.  Depending on the number of players registered, team placement and position will be determined by the coach’s evaluations.

RATING / SCORES

Players will be rated on a variety of skills and scrimmage play depending on the level (Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, etc.).  PeeWee, Bantam and Midget scoring will differ from Mite & Squirt scoring.

Players at the PeeWee and Bantam will be rated an “A”, “B”, “C” or “D” player depending on the number of kids that tryout.  Internal Raters may elect to observe players “in-play” during current season games.  No Scores will be given.

Mites and Squirts players will receive a numerical grade for each skill which will then be tabulated.  (i.e., 1 – 4 rating on the ½)  The highest & lowest tabulated scores will be dropped.

The following is an all-inclusive list of skills that players may be rated on.

Forward Start – Acceleration – Forward Skating – Backward Skating – Balance Crossovers –

Stopping –Turns – Shooting – Stick Handling – Situational Play

Note: The number of goals a player gets during scrimmage play does not necessarily mean he/she will get a higher score for situational play.  Score is based on overall knowledge of the game. Factors such as puck control, passing, shooting, back-checking, aggressiveness to the puck, ability to anticipate the play and ability to be in position all contribute to the overall Situational Play Score.  Encouraging your child to “just get goals” may not increase his/her score.

SCORES

  • Nightly scores will NOT be posted by SYH

  • Scores will be tabulated at the completion of tryouts.

  • Any 2nd year player within their age bracket (any player remaining within their age bracket, Mites, Squirts, PeeWee, Bantam and Midget in 2010-2011 season) will not be moved down more than one level.

Example:  Child one played Mite 1 this year and he/she will be a Mite again next year.  At Tryouts he/she has a poor showing and places on the Mite 3 team.  This rule would bump them to the Mite 2 team.

COACHES

Head Coaches will be selected by the Stoneham Youth Hockey Board of Directors.  Head coaches will be responsible for selecting their assistant coaches and team manager.  ALL COACHES MUST POSSESS A LEVEL THREE PATCH All head coaches, assistant coaches and team managers are required to pass a CORI.

TEAM CREATION

  • The minimum number of kids per team will be no less than 11 players (10 skaters 1 goalie), with a maximum of no more than 17 (15 skaters, 2 goalies).  This all depends on the number of players per level.  The Board will make every effort to adhere to these guidelines unless circumstances prove unavoidable to increase the number of players per team.

  • Mites & Squirts - Will be determined by final rating scores.  Players will be broken down into groups of equal sized teams within the level.

  • The top rated players will be the 1 Team; the second tier would be the 2 Team, the third tier the 3 Team, fourth tier the 4 Team and fifth the 5 Team.”

  • PeeWee, Bantams & Midgets & Girls - Team Selection process will be decided based on the number of players at the final registration.

  • Final Teams will be posted no later than Friday, April 23, 2010 on our website www.syhockey.org

  • The Sibling rule is in effect – Parent/Guardian of siblings that make different teams may have both siblings play together on the lower of the two teams.  Parents may elect to leave siblings on two different teams. Unless siblings are separate, in that case, the next player in line will be chosen to take the place of the lower rated sibling.)

ABSENT FROM TRYOUTS

  • The numbers of teams per level have not been determined. Therefore, please do not miss Tryouts assuming there may only be two teams.

  • New players to SYH that have missed Tryouts will be placed on a team based on Team Availability, Coaches Input, Number of Players on a Team and approval by the Stoneham Youth Hockey Board of Directors

  • Any player missing tryouts with a valid excuse will be placed accordingly by the coaches and Board based on player knowledge and history with SYH.

  • Existing and/or past players who miss tryouts without a valid excuse will be placed on a team based on Team Availability, Coaches Input, Number of Players on a Team and approval by the Stoneham Youth Hockey Board of Directors

Excused absences will consist of:

2.  Planned Vacation:  Must notify SYH Board in advance of tryouts and vacation.  Notifying the Board after tryouts WILL NOT is considered a valid excuse.

NOTE: Trying out for Select, Metro, and/or any other team WILL NOT constitute a valid excuse for missing SYH tryouts.

ABSENT FROM PART OF TRYOUTS

  • Player missing one of the two sessions will be placed accordingly by the coaches and Board of Directors.

GOALIES

·         Any player trying out as a goalie and making a team other than the LAST team, will NOT be allowed to skate as a skater on that team.

·         Teams with two goalies will split goalie-playing time equally.

If a player decides he/she does not want to be a goalie after the season has started:

  • First year players (NEW TO THE LEVEL) will be placed on the last team as a skater. Regardless of where he/she placed the previous year.

Example:  Child one played PeeWee 1 this year; he/she are moving to Bantams and wants to tryout as a goalie. He/she make the Bantam 2 team. One month into the season they decide they do NOT want to play goalie anymore.  They will get placed as a skater on the lowest Bantam team.

  • Second year players, will be placed one team LOWER than what he/she played the previous year.

Example: Child one played PeeWee 1 this year. He/she wants to tryout as a goalie for next year. He/she makes the PeeWee 3 team. One month into the season they decide they do NOT a want to play goalie anymore.  They will get placed as a skater on the PeeWee 2 team.

If a player decides he/she does not want to be a goalie after the first session of tryouts:

  • Player will be placed accordingly by the coaches and Board of Directors.
